The Weapon of Mass Destruction

A weapon of mass destruction (WMD) is a weapon that can kill and bring significant harm to a large numbers of humans (and other life forms) and/or cause great damage to man-made structures (e.g. buildings), natural structures (e.g. mountains), or the biosphere in general.  The first use of the term “weapon of mass destruction” on record is by Cosmo Gordon Lang, Archbishop of Canterbury, in 1937 in reference to the aerial bombardment of Guernica, Spain.  Most of us know of its contemporary use by President George W. Bush.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigations website, in July 2006, the FBI created the Weapons of Mass Destruction Directorate, or WMDD, to build a cohesive and coordinated approach to incidents involving nuclear, radiological, biological, or chemical weapons—with an overriding focus on prevention.  To do its job, the WMDD proactively seeks out and relies upon intelligence to drive preparedness, countermeasures, and investigations designed to keep threats from becoming reality.

In the spiritual realm, our directorate, the LORD God (Jehovah), focuses on restoration and prevention in the battle against the spiritual weapon of mass destruction.  Rather than destroying physical or natural structures, the wicked one desires to destroy God’s greatest creation, the spirit of  man.  Sin is the greatest weapon of mass destruction.  Since man is the most valuable of all God creations, sin must be the greatest weapon of mass destruction.  Sin causes death.  Since all sin, all have died.  In our text today, 2 Corinthians 10:1-6, the Apostle Paul tells us in verses 3-4 that “3For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.”

In a spiritual sense, what are strongholds?  The word stronghold used here in the Greek is ochyrōma (o-khü’-rō-mä).  It means:
1) a castle, stronghold, fortress, fastness
2) anything on which one relies
             a) of the arguments and reasonings by which a disputant endeavours to fortify his opinion and defend it
                   against his opponent

We must realize that every other spiritual entity that does not align itself with the Jehovah seeks to fortify its opinion and defend its opinion against God.  There are people and other spiritual beings that are serving as weapons of mass destruction.  According to the book of John chapter 10, Jesus said, “9I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved (or kept safe). He will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”  To live life or serve anything or anyone else other that Jehovah, man gives himself over to a stronghold.

By relying on Christ, we can experience victory over any sinful stronghold in our lives.  Romans 8:35-39 tells us “35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Since sin is the greatest weapon of mass destruction, Christ, therefore, must be the most supreme defense.  Christ is the greatest of mass construction.  Where sin tears down, Christ builds up.

Be built up!
