How Do You Keep What Matters?

February 3, 2015

We try to keep our health, finances, futures, homes, outer beauty and food. There is a huge market in America for preserving or keeping food from spoiling. Many of our foods have preservatives added in order to keep food from spoiling as quickly. We too join the party by purchasing tupperware-like containers, freezer paper, plastic wrap, and aluminum foil. My mom bought my dad a “Food Saver” machine to encase food in a thick plastic while in the refrigerator or freezer. He has termed the process cryovacing. Regardless of the method or matter, we, by our actions, realize that things in this world are in decay. It leads me to ask How Do You Keep What Matters?

In 1 Peter 1, Peter addressed the believer’s concern about the preservation of their salvation. Listen to the Word of God.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

First, Peter addresses the nature of our salvation. Unlike the things in this world, our inheritance can never perish, spoil or fade. It is enduring. It is eternal. It is indestructible. Again, I ask How Do You Keep What Matters?. There is nothing that matters more than the soul of man. A man’s soul is arguably the most valued and prized of all God’s creations. We know God placed a high value on the soul of man because of what He paid for the souls of man. He paid the price of His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus died to purchase or redeem man. It is through Christ that man is reconciled unto God.

How does God answer the question of How Do You Keep What Matters? He says it right here in the passage. Man is incapable of keeping himself. God keeps our inheritance in heaven for us, but man always has a part to play in God’s economy. What is our part in keeping ourselves? Our part is to have faith. The Word says, you “who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.” It is man’s faith that activates God’s power to keep us until the coming salvation. Faith activates or initiates God’s power.

What is faith? Generally, faith is the conviction of the truth of anything, belief. The Greek word for faith in this passage is pistis (pē’-stēs). Of God, it means the conviction that God exists and is the creator and ruler of all things, the provider and bestower of eternal salvation through Christ. Of Christ, it means a strong and welcome conviction or belief that Jesus is the Messiah, through whom we obtain eternal salvation in the kingdom of God.

Hebrews 11:6 says, “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” Hebrews 11:1 says, “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” How Do You Keep What Matters? God says through faith in Him, through faith in Christ.
Where is your confidence today? How well have you kept yourself or anything else for that matter? If we are honest with ourselves, we have not done a good job because we realize we are virtually powerless to keep ourselves, our kids, our family, loved ones, prized possessions or anything. How Do You Keep What Matters? Through faith in God. Trust Him.
