Cultivating Courage: Day 2

Now that we know courage is defined courage as the quality of mind or spirit enabling us to see danger, face opposition, or the challenges of life with fearlessness, calmness and firmness, let us begin an exploration in the Word of God as to how to develop or foster the growth of courage through our labor and attention and training i.e. cultivate courage.

Over the next few days maybe weeks, we will look at verses that deal with courage or the antithesis of it, fear, in efforts to cultivate courage. Let’s see how God says that we can develop our courage.

The first example comes from Genesis 3 (NASB)

Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’” The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings.

While not a traditional verse on courage or fear, we can see how history would have been significantly different had Adam and Eve exercised the quality of mind or spirit enabling us to see danger, face opposition, or the challenges of life with fearlessness, calmness and firmness.

In my life experiences, I discovered early on that I could learn how to do something by observing the negative. Simply said, we can learn what to do by seeing how someone did it wrongly. Adam and Eve serve as our fist lesson on Cultivating Courage: Day 2.

From the text, we see the first thing we must do is know what God has said i.e. the Word of God. I like imagery of verse 1 as written in the NIV – “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”

  • The first element to Cultivate Courage is a knowledge of the Word of God. Satan attempted to create doubt in Eve’s mind by asking if God really said i.e. commanded something. Eve was truly prepared for this first punch or tight right as my brother says. She answered satan by quoting Genesis 2:16-17. If we will recall, Eve was not present when God told Adam what is in those verses. God created Eve after that.
  • In that, we learn another important element of cultivating courage. We must teach those whom we are responsible what God has said. Jesus said “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.” (John 17:17)
  • The next element in cultivation courage is realizing that the barrage of attacks will not stop at one attempt. He came back after she quoted the Word just as he did when tempting Jesus. He upped the ante on Eve. He went from doubt to deception by telling her a lie. “You surely will not die!” then he appealed to her desire to have more, greed. He caused her to question God’s character, who He is i.e. good, giving and sharing.

Eve fell for it. Not only her, but Adam too. In the face opposition or the challenges of life, they, along with us, failed to stand with fearlessness, calmness and firmness, They gave into their selfishness while choosing to believe satan over God.

Notice the original choice involved life and death. If mankind obeyed God, mankind would live. If mankind disobeyed God, he would die. We know that mankind disobeyed bringing death. Adam and Eve could have eaten from the tree of life and lived for eternity in God’s great creation. They did not neither do we which is why God provided for them a sacrifice and Jesus as a sacrifice for us. We have the ability to choice life or death today, choose to be courageous today. You will know what the choice is or choices are when it comes as the Lord will speak to you through the Spirit.
