TRUTH: The Full Armor of God – Stand Firm

Ask anyone who has been anesthetized, concussed, or injured on their lower extremities how hard it is to stand. About a year ago, I shredded my achilles tendon. In that moment, I could not stand. My son, and later joined by my daughter, had to help me off the ground and steady me as I hopped into the house. With an injury to my achilles, I could not stand.

Similarly, Paul reminds us that our enemy, the devil, is out to destroy us. Without specific supports or aids, we will not be able to stand against the devil. In our own strength, we are no match for him, but he is no match for our Maker. Colossians 2:10 tells us that Jesus “is the head over every power and authority.” Furthermore, verse 15 tells us that Jesus  “disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.” TRUTH: The Armor of God – Stand Firm

In our text from Ephesians 6, we see the exhortation, admonishment or command to STAND FIRM.

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. (NIV)

13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. (NASB)

13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. (NKJV)

Within two sentences, we are told to put on the Full Armor of God. We know that armor protects, but verse 13 reveals the real reason we are to put on the Full Armor of God. What do we know to be true from the text?

  • Our strength and power comes from the Lord
  • Our protection comes from the Armor of God
  • Our enemy is the devil
  • Our enemy has schemes
  • Our struggle or battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

As a result of who our battle is against, our enemy the devil, God has offered us weapons which are not of this world. They have divine power to demolish strongholds. Here in Ephesians 6, we begin to learn about those weapons; however, we first need to know why we need those weapons.

13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

TRUTH: The Armor of God – Stand Firm.  According to the text, we cannot STAND FIRM without using or deploying the weapons God has given us. I believe that the day of evil refers to our daily living as well as any greater tribulation to come. Ephesians 5:16 tells us to make “the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” God is saying on a daily basis we are to put on the full armor of God because the days are full of evil. God’s strength/power and full armor is give so that the believer can STAND FIRM.

Without the power and armor of God, we have no chance of standing against our enemy. That is that the Word of God says. As such, we need to give full attention to what the armor is in order to best equip ourselves. Now, you know the TRUTH: The Armor of God – Stand Firm.

A fellow believer has offered that God gives the Christian a glorious standing to maintain by faith and spiritual warfare:

· We stand in grace (Romans 5:2).
· We stand in the gospel (1 Corinthians 15:1).
· We stand in courage and strength (1 Corinthians 16:13).
· We stand in faith (2 Corinthians 1:24).
· We stand in Christian liberty (Galatians 5:1).
· We stand in Christian unity (Philippians 1:27).
· We stand in the Lord (Philippians 4:1).
· We should stand perfect and complete in the will of God (Colossians 4:12).
