TRUTH: How to Put on Your New Self

Recently, Nike initiated a revival of their old Be Like Mike campaign. Micheal Jordan was arguably the greatest NBA basketball player to date. There are always people to emulate in this world, but for the follower of Christ, it is not Mike or any other man/woman. It is Jesus who is the standard. TRUTH: How to Put on Your New Self

The post TRUTH: Who has a Futile Mind, Darkened Understanding and are Excluded from the Life of God? gets me back to Ephesians 4. We had reached the point where Paul had begun to give instructions on how to live in true righteousness and holiness as we seek to be like Christ. This leads us to the title of today’s post – TRUTH: How to Put on Your New Self.

The concept of a new self or new person is reflective of the commitment one makes when surrendering his/her life to Christ, the Son of God and Savior, in confession of his/her sins in exchange for redemption, the forgiveness of sins. 2 Corinthians 5:14-17 tells us

14 For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. 15 And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.

16 So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

Romans 6:4 tells us that “We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” TRUTH: How to Put on Your New Self.

This is why Paul connects those matters with what he told the believers in Ephesians 4

22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds;24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body. 26 “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold. 28 Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.

29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God,with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

TRUTH: How to Put on Your New Self involves being made new in the attitude of your minds or to be renewed in the spirit of your mind. Romans 12:2 “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Paul is telling the Ephesians the TRUTH: How to Put on Your New Self .

How do we put on our new self? We are transformed by renewing our mind. Our minds are made new by learning and applying the Word of God in the manner in which we think. We allow the Word of God to shape our attitudes. We have to remember that our lives are not our own if we profess Christ as Lord and Savior. Our lives are His. Galatians 2:20 says, “20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” That is the TRUTH: How to Put on Your New Self. The next post will examine what particular attitudes of our mind we should transform.

If you have never surrendered your life to Christ, then that is your first step in having a new life. I should say life period, because without Christ, there is no life. John 3:36 tells us “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.”
