TRUST: God Works out Everything in Conformity with the Purpose of his Will

We are consumed with the future. We are not just consumed with the future, but we are consumed with ensuring that the future holds what is good for us, our children and future generations. On a global scale, nations, not just individuals, are working to address matters related to climate change. Just look at the amount of life insurance people purchase trying to ensure a good financial position for their loved ones. In this country, the rhetoric over the National Debt has loomed large over the past few presidential cycles. Whether global, national or individual, we are consumed with the future; however, we should TRUST: God Works out Everything in Conformity with the Purpose of his Will.

TRUST: God Works out Everything in Conformity with the Purpose of his Will. What does that really mean and what impact should that have on our lives? If you are a follower of Christ and hold fact to Jehovah as God Almighty, we should be consoled at that statement. Everything for the believer in Christ is predicated on the character, who God is, and the authority/power of God, what God can do. Numbers 23:19 addresses the core issue of what we should believe about God – “God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?” (ESV) Furthermore, God is faithful. When we know that God is Almighty, keeps His promises and is faithful to do all He promised, we should TRUST: God Works out Everything in Conformity with the Purpose of his Will.

Let’s look at our text that connects God’s character, who He is, and God’s authority/power, what He can do, to our future.

Ephesians 1

11 In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will,12 in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory. (NIV)

I do not want to miss the obvious. The “him” above in the text is referring to Jehovah God, the one true God. Isaiah 45:5 says, “I am the Lord, and there is no other, apart from me there is no God. I will strengthen you, though you have not acknowledge me.” Those are not my words, but God’s. Again, when we know God’s character, who He is, and God’s authority/power, what God can do, we should TRUST: God Works out Everything in Conformity with the Purpose of his Will.

This is not a solitary idea. It has been demonstrated by God from His interaction with Adam and Eve through Revelation. While I admit, that it certainly does not always appear to be that way, God is working out everything in conformity with the purpose of His will. What does the Word tell us about God’s purpose? The Lord Almighty has sworn, “Surely, as I have planned, so it will be, and as I have purposed, so it will happen. (Isaiah 14:24). “For the Lord Almighty has purposed, and who can thwart him? His hand is stretched out, and who can turn it back?” (Isaiah 14:27). What does God say about His will? His will stays consistent from generation to generation (Genesis 17:7). God accomplishes His will (Genesis 22:8). He reveals His will (Judges 18:5). God is with us when we are being used to accomplish His will (1 Chronicles 28:20). His will is good, pleasing and perfect (Romans 12:2).

Joseph is one great example of how we should TRUST: God Works out Everything in Conformity with the Purpose of his Will. We should be other examples, so God can be glorified through our difficulties, hardships, trials and sufferings. If we are followers of Jesus, that is what He exhibited – bringing glory to God through His sufferings. Now, will you TRUST: God Works out Everything in Conformity with the Purpose of his Will?
