TRUTH: Why Call Upon God?

TRUTH: Why Call Upon God? The answer to that is eternal, but for those of us who lack that focus, the bible has more concrete and immediate answers. There are a multitude of reasons why one would call upon God such as the most obvious, we need Him. The list of reasons to call upon God could be discussed for weeks on this site. Similarly in our text today, Psalm 86, there are many reasons listed to call upon God but, I will just focus on three outlined in verse 5.

Psalm 86:1-7  (NKJV)

Bow down Your ear, O Lord, hear me;
For I am poor and needy.
Preserve my life, for I am holy;
You are my God;
Save Your servant who trusts in You!
Be merciful to me, O Lord,
For I cry to You all day long.
Rejoice the soul of Your servant,
For to You, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive,
And abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You.

Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer;
And attend to the voice of my supplications.
In the day of my trouble I will call upon You,
For You will answer me.

While my commentary about verse five will be brief, out thoughts or meditation about them should not be. God’s love, forgiveness and mercy should be ruminated in our hearts and minds today.  TRUTH: Why Call Upon God?

Who does not want someone to be good to them especially God? No one. Everyone desires to experience good in their lives. This is especially true since Romans 3:12 tells us that “All have turned aside, together they have become uselessThere is none who does goodThere is not even one.”” We tend to think that we are good. The bible clarifies that in the essence of our being we are not good. This is all the more why we need to reflect on the fact that God is good. TRUTH: Why Call Upon God?

In addition to God’s goodness, God is ready to forgive. Again, who does not want to be forgiven of our sins, our wrong doings. No one! All sin and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 6:23 tells us “ For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Death or forgiveness, which would you choose? Have you made that choice to ask Jesus to forgive you of your sins as a function of you surrendering your life to Him as Lord and Savior? TRUTH: Why Call Upon God?

Lastly, God is  abundant in mercy to all who call upon Him. Hallelujah! I know that I need all the mercy I can get because I have asked God to forgive me of my responding to people in pride and anger way too many times; yet, I see here that God is abundant in mercy. Who does not need an abundance of mercy more than an abundance of money which we probably crave more than mercy. TRUTH: Why Call Upon God?

I am going to end, so I can call upon God for love, forgiveness and mercy. I pray you do the same today and hereafter. TRUTH: Why Call Upon God?
