TRUST: Jesus is the Authority!

Whose in control? There will always be fights over control or authority. We see that with siblings. We see that with spouses. We see that with neighboring countries. We see that with resources like water or petroleum. No matter where and no matter what, fights over authority exist throughout our lives. TRUST: Jesus Is the Authority!

I know and TRUST: Jesus Is the Authority from Mark 1. There we learn that the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove. 11 Then a voice came from heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Furthermore, we know that Jesus taught with authority (v.22), and we see the people internalized that Jesus commanded unclean spirit. They knew that Jesus had authority.

23 Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24 saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”

25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” 26 And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him. 27 Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? What new doctrine is this? For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.” 28 And immediately His fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee.

Fast forward to chapter 9 of Mark. Jesus is still demonstrating and developing TRUST: Jesus Is the Authority. Once again, Jesus shows His authority over unclean, impure or evil spirits. Jesus commands the spirit to come out of a man’s son who has suffered many years from the impact of that unclean spirit.

Mark 9

14 When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them. 15 As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him.

16 “What are you arguing with them about?” he asked.

17 A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. 18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.”

19 “You unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”

20 So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.

21 Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?”

“From childhood,” he answered. 22 “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”

23 “‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”

24 Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the impure spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”

26 The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He’s dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.

The spirit had authority over the boy for years. That spirits reign in the son’s life was over. The unclean or impure spirit was complicit with Jesus’ command, but he wanted to do damage to the man’s son one last time. The spirit made the boy shriek and convulse violently before he came out of him never to enter him again. Jesus’ statement to never enter him again shows that He has final and ultimate authority. It also affirms the correct conclusion the people arrived at in Mark 1. It affirms what the spirit in Mark 1 knew too. That spirit properly identified Jesus as the Holy One of God. TRUST: Jesus Is the Authority

TRUST: Jesus Is the Authority was shown in Mark 1 and in every passage up to Mark 9 and beyond. Jesus is not just the final authority. Jesus Is the Authority. Jesus Himself said, “For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” Jesus has the authority to give you eternal life if you TRUST in who He says He is and what He says He can do.

Do you question who has authority? In this world mired in mess, are you wondering who is really in control? Ephesians tells us that “God placed all things under his (Jesus’) feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church,”Jude 1:24-25 says, “24 To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy— 25 to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.” TRUST: Jesus Is the Authority!
