TRUST: Who Persuaded You to Trust in Lies

In the post TRUST: In the Word not in False Prophets, you were encouraged to learn the Word of God, so you can trust in the Good Shepherd rather than in false prophets. I also alluded to the elect being misled. Both Matthew and Mark speak to that matter. Matthew 24:24 says “For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.” while Mark 13:22 says “For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.” Both disciples give assurance that the elect probably will not be deceived not because they are so knowledgable but because of the indwelling Spirit living in them; therefore, I am asking TRUST: Who Persuaded You to Trust in Lies?

Let’s read Jeremiah 29 where God gave Jeremiah a message to Shemaiah.

24 Tell Shemaiah the Nehelamite, 25 “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You sent letters in your own name to all the people in Jerusalem, to the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah, and to all the other priests. You said to Zephaniah, 26 ‘The Lord has appointed you priest in place of Jehoiada to be in charge of the house of the Lord; you should put any maniac who acts like a prophet into the stocks and neck-irons. 27 So why have you not reprimanded Jeremiah from Anathoth, who poses as a prophet among you? 28 He has sent this message to us in Babylon: It will be a long time. Therefore build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce.’”

29 Zephaniah the priest, however, read the letter to Jeremiah the prophet. 30 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 31 “Send this message to all the exiles: ‘This is what the Lord says about Shemaiah the Nehelamite: Because Shemaiah has prophesied to you, even though I did not send him, and has persuaded you to trust in lies, 32 this is what the Lord says: I will surely punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his descendants. He will have no one left among this people, nor will he see the good things I will do for my people, declares the Lord, because he has preached rebellion against me.’”

While the passage above is more of an indictment of Shemaiah, it is also an indictment of the inhabitants of Jerusalem for they believed a false prophet, one who was not sent by God nor in His name. God is providing us that text as well as others to help us understand that we must examine what people are saying and filter it through the Word of God, so it will not be said of us TRUST: Who Persuaded You to Trust in Lies? For more detail into what happened with God’s people because of their rebellion read 2 Kings 24-25.

The references below all convey that deception of God’s people has long been a tactic of the wicked one –TRUST: Who Persuaded You to Trust in Lies. In fact, it goes all the way back to Adam and Eve when they were presented with some truth garnished with a lie. We must commit to understanding that to follow Chris who filtered partial truths with the whole truth, the Word of God

Exodus 7:11
11 Pharaoh then summoned wise men and sorcerers, and the Egyptian magicians also did the same things by their secret arts:

Exodus 7:22
22 But the Egyptian magicians did the same things by their secret arts, and Pharaoh’s heart became hard; he would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as theLord had said.

2 Thessalonians 2:9-11
The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie,10 and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie 12 and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.

Revelation 13:13
13 And it performed great signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to the earth in full view of the people.

Revelation 16:14
14 They are demonic spirits that perform signs, and they go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them for the battle on the great day of God Almighty.

Revelation 19:20
20 But the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who had performed the signs on its behalf. With these signs he had deluded those who had received the mark of the beast and worshiped its image. The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur.

TRUST: Who Persuaded You to Trust in Lies will be a recurring matter for us to guard against and not fall prey. The bible, in 1 Peter 5:8, tells us to “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Those in Jerusalem were devoured by Nebuchadnezzar because they did not listened to God’s words. According to God, they were “words that I sent to them again and again by my servants the prophets. And you exiles have not listened either,” declares the Lord. (v.19)

Considering all of that, I submit to you TRUST: Who Persuaded You to Trust in Lies?
