How Does One See in the Dark?

In the Underground Railroad, the slaves who were seeking freedom in the north traveled by night. Everyone knows that it is dark at night. When it is dark, you can’t see well or at all. There is a room in my basement that is entirely surrounded by other rooms. When the only door to a room that is lit with daylight is closed, the room is completely dark. By dark, I mean dark. I can’t see my hand right in front of me. It is a room that I seek refuge when I really want to get some sleep as my senses cannot determine if it is day or night. How Does One See in the Dark? The only way for me to see is to know where the light source is and turn on the light. I must pursue the light to see in the darkness.

Similarly, we cannot see spiritually when we are in the dark. What is spiritual darkness? Darkness is the absences of light; therefore, spiritual darkness has to do with one’s spirit being devoid of light. How Does One See in the Dark? In John 8:12, Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” There really is no reason for me to drag this out. Jesus said it all. If you do not know Jesus as Savior and Lord, you do not have the light. You are in the dark. You are spiritually walking and living in the darkness. You are running, bumping, stumbling and falling in the dark. You are hurting yourself because you cannot see where you are going. Your are living in the dominion of darkness ruled by satan. There is hope for you though. Colossians 1:12-14 informs us of the hope you have to be rescued from the dominion of darkness where it says, “12 and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” Surrender to Jesus and follow Him.

Matthew 5:14 tells us that “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. We are to be sure not to hide our light. Don’t act in ways that cast a shadow on Christ being Lord and Savior of your life. When we do, we are not letting our light shine. In fact, disobedience is like living in darkness. Listen to Luke 11:33-35 where we are told  “No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light.(B) 34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness. 35 See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness.
This is what Peter was reminding the believers of in 2 Peter 1:19. He said, “We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. How Does One See in the Dark? One sees in the dark by following Jesus because

2 Corinthians 4:6 tells us “For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.” Consequently, we are told in Ephesians 5:8

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.” We can no longer live like we want to live, but we must obey and follow Jesus. Remember 1 Thessalonians 5:5 which tells us that “You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.”
