Truth or Lies: Jesus Said/They Said

There is a vast amount of information that floods our minds daily. Like a Brita or Pur water filter, what we believe is dependent upon how well of a filtering mechanism we have developed. How does one determine what is Truth or Lies? When we believe or act on something is it based on Truth or Lies? The answer to that question is vitally important in life but more important as it relates to our spiritual estate. As light is the opposite of darkness, truth is the opposite of lies. Jesus declared that He was the light of the world.

As such in John 8, we see Truth or Lies as a central issue in the text. We see Jesus making proclamations about who He is, and the Pharisees contending every attribute about Jesus throughout the entire chapter. In surveying the text, let us review the verses to see what is said.

Jesus said: v12. “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”  They said: v13. 13 The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.”

Jesus said: v16. My decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. They said: v 19. Then they asked him, “Where is your father?” note: this is misconception about who Jesus’ earthly father and heavenly Father is the biggest void for the Pharisees and any other person.

We could keep going, but I am going to skip down further in the text to where Jesus makes truth the central issue.

Jesus said. v31-32 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They said: “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?” note: they conveniently forgot about being slaves in Egypt, ruled by Babylon, given into the hands of the Midianites, etc.

Jesus said: v38I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father.” They said: v39 “Abraham is our father,” they answered.

Jesus said: v39 “If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did. They said: v41 “We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.” note: Jesus had been challenging their belief in The Father. They asserted that Jesus was born illegitimately. WOW. They tried to go all in.

Jesus said: 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me. 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.” They said:48 The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?”

In this passage, the Pharisees refusal to believe and accept Jesus and His message is apparent. The Pharisees went tit for tat with Jesus all to no avail. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. Remember in John 7:18 Jesus said, “Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.” Jesus clearly expressed that He speaking what God had told Him. He was asserting, and I believe Him, that He was speaking the truth.

Truth or Lies:Jesus Said/They Said, you make a determination of who you will believe. Jesus as light of the world is the in whom I have placed my faith. I believe what He has said. I believe He is the truth, so I must believe His Word and not those of the world or even my own heart. What will you believe, Truth or Lies?
