What Sign Can You Show Us

i-085_nb_exit_086_01In this modern era, we are accustomed to signs providing direction for us to aid us in getting to our destination. There are road signs, traffic signs, bathroom signs, signs to help us put together new products that we purchase. There are even more signs online signifying access to Facebook, Twitter, Drive, Flickr, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, app stores, and the like. There are signs everywhere. There is no wondering why people with a fallen nature asks  What Sign Can You Show Us.

Asking for a sign is not a new phenomena. In some instances, asking for a sign does not convey doubt but direction. The person has accepted God’s direction and path for life but is unsure of the direction God would like him/her to go, but that is not what I am referring to in today’s post. I am referring to when we in our hearts don’t believe and ask God What Sign Can You Show Us. We see that before Jesus’ incarnation but not anymore poignant than with Jesus as he interacts with those with unbelieving hearts.

In John 2,

18 The Jews then responded to him, “What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?” 19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”

20 They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” 21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body. 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.

If you are unfamiliar with the passage, the Jews ask Jesus this in response to Jesus driving all from the temple courts, scattering the coins of the money changers and overturning their tables. They felt Jesus had no authority over them and wanted to know who are you to do this and demand any other actions of us.

Jesus answers them by saying “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.” Those in the temple with unbelieving hearts were focused on the physical. Review their response from verse 20 – “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?”. On the contrary, those, the disciples, with believing hearts were focused on the spiritual, “But the temple he had spoken of was his body” They remembered what Jesus said and believed.

Jesus gave the Jews the sign they asked for but not at that moment. He told them that He would raise “this temple” in three days if they destroyed it. Jesus was crucified by the Jews’ choice and for our sin. He was raised from the dead on the third day just as it was prophesied and as He said Himself; yet, that contingent almost exclusively rejected the sign that Jesus gave them. In fact, Jesus was still being asked What Sign Can You Show Us while on the cross by those with unbelieving hearts. “36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar 37 and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.”” Luke 23:36-37.

Where are you? Do you need a sign to direct you to Jesus? Have you believed the signs that He has shown you? The truth is that we all vacillate between belief and unbelief in Christ where we all ask What Sign Can You Show Us, “But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.” James 1:6
