How To Become A Child of God

As a child, I knew that my mom paid various bills such as the light bill, gas bill, water bill, bought food and the like. At no time did she require me to be responsible for those expenses. As her child, she understood that I was dependent upon her to provide for my needs. That was a privilege in being a child. I was not responsible or independent. I was dependent on my mom.

Contrary to popular belief, not every person is a child of God. This begs me to ask How To Become A Child of God? Everyone is a creation of God, but in order to be a child of God, you have to be adopted into God’s family. Adoption is an act of God in which He makes us members of His family. Any person who trusts in Jesus as Lord and Savior is given the right to become a child of God. As a benefit of becoming a child of God, we enjoy a union with God, a special intimacy unavailable to those whose sin separates them from God. The children of God are heirs to all the promises God has for them that are aligned to His will for their lives.

John 1

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

Not everyone is a child of God because they do not want to be dependent upon God. Most people want to live their lives pursuing their own desires, passions and lusts. God requires us to actively subdue those desires, passions and lusts. This is what it means to receive Jesus as Lord and Savior. We exchange our lives and the permission to choose as we wish for an adherence to the life and direction that reflects the desires of God.  Galatians 3:26-27 says, “26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.”

Because of sin, no human being is considered a child of God by nature; this is the privilege only of those who have faith, a faith generated in them by the sovereign action of God (v13 above). It answers How To Become A Child of God. Now that we know, the question is what will we do? Will we receive the gift of eternal life and adoptions through Jesus Christ or will we rejected the gift of eternal life and adoption through Jesus Christ? How we respond to Jesus will determine our natural and eternal estate. Choose wisely.
