Spiritual Lottery

In Georgia, there are a myriad of lottery games with Mega Millions and Powerball being the two largest payouts on a consistent basis. Many people have played lottery games with hopes to “cash in” on winnings. Undoubtedly, people have dreams of what they would do with that money. While I don’t play, some in my family play regularly. There are conversations of good will that are discussed about who would get what and why. The general consensus is that I want my family to experience the financial benefit of lottery winnings.

Expressing and demonstrating goodwill to family is nothing new. In fact, it’s almost a right of passage for families to espouse those values. As I shared in the post Turn on the Lights, I am looking for A Savior, God often uses concepts in the physical world to help us understand spiritual truths and principles.  It is clear that we need money to live and function in this world. Many see winning the lottery as salvation to financial woes or hardships. No one would argue that having money would free us from financial debts. If any of us had large sums of money, we would want to share with those in our family and those whom we cared about. We see this same demonstration of care in Acts 16 except that the freedom there is freedom from sin. Let’s see.

29 The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas.30 He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” 32 Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. 33 At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his household were baptized. 34 The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God—he and his whole household.”

We see the jailer ask what must he do to be free. Paul and Silas believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved – you and your household. The jailer had been granted the Spiritual Lottery – salvation, the forgiveness of sins. Paul and Silas key us into sharing freedom with our household. Households believing in Jesus was not a new experience. As the proceed link shows, there were several instances where one conversion led to entire family conversions. That is my prayer for my family. I am sure some of us have prayed for a financial windfall short of asking God to let us win the lottery but a lottery of sorts if you will. The biggest lottery is the Spiritual Lottery.

I know that we would get excited about having a large sum of money. The excitement about salvation should not even compare. Money can’t buy you love, joy, peace, and the rest of the Fruits of the Spirit. Those can only be given by the Spirit to those who have believed in the Lord Jesus as Lord and Savior. Who in your family do you desire to share your Spiritual Lottery. Pray right now, at this instant that God would give you first the excitement about your salvation if you have trusted in Christ as Lord and Savior. Then ask God to give you the opportunity to share Him with your family and that it would result in them receiving the gift of salvation.
