The Spirit said What?

In the post Being Taught and Lead by the Spirit, the notion of living according to or by the Spirit surfaces as the main them of the Christian life. In order to live the life God designed for us, we must live according to the Spirit. John 16 tells us, “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.”

What does the Spirit say? What He hears and what is yet to come. Who is it that speaks to the Spirit? Those whom God desires to speak. Let’s see a few examples where The Spirit said What?

Acts 10:18-20 – 19 While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Simon, three men are looking for you. 20 So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them.”

Acts 11:12 – The Spirit told me to have no hesitation about going with them. These six brothers also went with me, and we entered the man’s house.

Acts 13:2 – While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”

If you noticed, those few verses were from the book of Acts. Where the Holy Spirit is fully introduced to His full role of leading, guiding and convicting. It is in the book of Acts that the Holy Spirit begins to function just as Christ said if He did not leave He could not send the Counselor. In Acts, we see the Spirit leading men of God in the plan of God. While not all instances with supernatural or with flair, the Spirit of God still leads, guides and convicts people. It is the job of the Spirit to direct the believer, so we must be in a position to hear from the Spirit.

We position ourselves to hear from the Spirit by reading and learning the Word of God. We must hear it, read it, memorize it, meditate on it, and study the Word of God. When we do, we position ourselves to hear from God and to receive His blessings. Romans 5:5 says, “And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.” We have hope in God through the Spirit who has been given to us.

Why am I saying all of this? I want us to know that the Spirit of God speaks to us informing us of what God has said or is saying to us. His job is to take from God to make known to us. Our job is to be humble, ingest the Word of God and believe the Word of God. If not, you will be devoid of certainty of direction for all things and constantly asking The Spirit said What?

Tomorrow, we will see a few more examples of what God spoke to people. For now, ask God to guide you through the power of the Holy Spirit.
