One Way to Know What God Said

Through Spiritual Earthquakes and examples from You Better Listen: God is Speaking, we know that God speaks to man. Whether using a donkey to speak to Balaam, a burning bush to speak to Moses, or a in a gentle whisper as He did with Elijah, God speaks to man especially those whom He desires to draw nearer to Himself.

While God has not confined Himself to speaking to man through the miraculous or unusual, we know that He has chosen to primarily speak to man through His Word. Once more, we see that assertion confirmed in the Word of God. Hebrews 1:1-3 tells us “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.”

There are times where we know with certainty that God has spoken to us, but there are also times when we are not sure exactly what God has said to us. In those times, we are perplexed in trying to determine if it was God or something else including ourselves. When God spoke to Moses in the burning bush, Moses had no illusions that it was God speaking to him. On the contrary, Samuel did not have that same certainty when God was calling him. So, how do we know God is speaking to us?

I cannot over-simplify this matter, but today, I can give you one guiding principle. First, God will NEVER tell you do something to violate His Word. Let me give you an example. I was speaking to one of my former students about her current boyfriend whom she has allowed to move into her home. She told me that conversationally, mentally, emotionally and every way she and her boyfriend are essentially married. Whoa! I said say what? She talked about how God had brought him into her life at the right time. How his values and ideologies were so aligned to hers. She is rationalizing what she wants because God is clearly against fornication and cohabitation without consummating the relationship through marriage between a man and a woman.

You Better Listen: God is Speaking. 1 Thessalonians 4 says, “It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God; and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister. The Lord will punish all those who commit such sins, as we told you and warned you before. For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit.”

Reading and standing on the Word is One Way to Know What God SaidIt is clear from the Word that God does not want someone living like they are married, but they are not. We can’t dream up or rationalize anything the contradicts the Word of God. The problem is either we don’t know what the Word of God says or we don’t care. We often are perplexed in determining what God has said, but following the Word of God is One Way to Know What God Said. Watch who you are listening to self, satan or the Suffering Servant who saves our souls.
