Get rid of all bitterness

I will be quick this morning in talking about bitterness. Today, Paul provides us some practical steps to live the life in a manner worthy of God. This verse is for those who have surrendered their lives to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. In the context of the passage, Paul is talking to believers. For those of you who have not surrendered to Christ, making an effort to rid yourself of the unwanted characteristics is beneficial. It is also equally beneficial to emulate  compassion and forgiveness.  The extent to which that is done without the Spirit of God empowering you is less than those who are possessed by the Spirit. Here is our text.

Ephesians 4:30-32

30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Get rid of all bitterness. We are told to get rid of all bitterness. That means we share in the responsibility to reform and reshape our character. Earlier in verse 22, Paul tells us to “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;” This admonition to get rid of bitterness is a direct application of living for your new life in Christ. We can’t act like we used to before we received forgiveness for our sins. If we do, we grieve the Holy Spirit by being disobedient. We misrepresent Christ/God to the world who is looking at us. God chose to make himself known through man. When we reflect the character of God, people are encouraged to aspire to a greater standard, Christ’s.

Now off to it. Get rid of all bitterness
