What Elijah Prayed For – Honor and Worship God as God

Good morning,

As we continue on our journey to explore What Should I pray For?, we get an opportunity to reread a classic text in the demonstration of God’s power and His call to His people to follow Him. Ultimately, that is another thing that we should pray for – that is for people to follow Jehovah, the one true God. Our text today is 1 Kings 18. The main character, of course, is God, but the best supporting cast is the prophet Elijah who served the LORD God during the reign of King Ahab. King Ahab is most noted for his uxoriousness and idolatry.

Like anyone who wants to serve himself, Ahab did not like people who identified the truth; thus, telling him that he and his life style was in violation of what God expected. As prophet during Ahab’s reign, God called to speak to Ahab. Elijah means “my God is Jehovah”. God was confronting Ahab’s idolatry straight on. In the beginning, this frightened Elijah. He went through a pity party. God challenged his fear and lack of faith. God grew him up to the climax of today’s passage where Elijah confronts Ahab face to face.

Ahab had led the people into idol worship. Ahab instituted prophets of Baal. Anyone who desired to be a prophet could be a prophet of Baal during Ahab’s time. This is in sharp contrast with what God established. God had established the Levites as prophets in the worship process. God wanted the people worship Him. He instructed Elijah to ask “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.” Once more, the climax of God allowing the idol worship to continue is revealed in our text today. In 1 Kings 18, Elijah challenges four hundred fifty prophets of Baal to show the people who was the true God. While they had assumed duties (making sacrifices) reserved for those whom God had dictated, God wanted to use Elijah to show that the sacrifices they had been making to Baal were useless and empty because Baal was a false God. The challenge Elijah issued was that which ever God answered the call of the prophet by fire was the true God. The prophets of Baal called from morning till noon. “O Baal, answer us!” they shouted. But there was no response; no one answered.

Now, Elijah called out to Jehovah.

“O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. 37 Answer me, O LORD, answer me, so these people will know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”

38 Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.

39 When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, “The LORD—he is God! The LORD—he is God!”

God is calling all of us to answer the question that the prophets of Baal had to answer – who is God? What false gods are you pursuing instead of the LORD God? Who has He put in your life to herald His rightful reign in your life? I ask you What Elijah Prayed For – Honor and Worship God as God.
