Jesus upholds all things by the Word of His power

Yesterday, I encouraged us to Stop Trippin. Today, the title of today’s post tells us why. It’s not difficult to understand the concept of things being held together. Our books are held together by the binding along the spine of the book. Let it get wet, the book begins to unravel. Our wheels are held on our cars or bikes by nuts. If the nut becomes loosened, the wheel begins to wobble and may fall off without attention. Our houses are held together by the foundation. When the foundation falters, the house begins to crack or sway eventually leading to its collapse.

Have you ever thought about what is holding our lives, our country and our world together? One of our text of reference today reveals that to us. Hebrews 1:3 tells us “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.” There is so much in that verse about who my Lord Jesus is that I could not do justice in attempting to address it all; however, I want to give a stab at discussing the fact that He holds all things (created) together by the power of His Word. Here again, we see the power contained in the Word of God. The Son’s command holds the created order in existence (Col. 1:172 Pet. 3:4–7), preserving it from destruction until that day when His voice will remove all but the unshakable kingdom of God and its heirs (Hebrews 12:26–28).

Matthew Henry described Christ’s position like this: “By him he made the old creation, by him he makes the new creature, and by him he rules and governs both. [3.] He upholds all things by the word of his power: he keeps the world from dissolving. By him all things consist. The weight of the whole creation is laid upon Christ: he supports the whole and all the parts. When, upon the apostasy, the world was breaking to pieces under the wrath and curse of God, the Son of God, undertaking the work of redemption, bound it up again, and established it by his almighty power and goodness. None of the ancient prophets sustained such an office as this, none was sufficient for it.”

Let’s make it more simple. Christ is the preserver of the universe. Without Him, it is clear that things would fall apart. It may seem to us that things are spiraling out of control. True, people’s adherence to the ways of God are getting worse and worse, but God is still in control. Despite that, without Christ holding it together by the Word of His power, it would all collapse. In spiritual terms, Christ holds man together with God by reconciling man to God through His death, burial and resurrection from the dead. Paul said it like this  “Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.” Ephesians 2:19-21

God’s Word is powerful in salvation as well as in sustaining this world. You have access to that power through Christ Jesus. Choose wisely.
